EAPC ATLAS OF PALLIATIVE CARE IN EUROPE

Carlos Centeno, David Clark, Thomas Lynch, Javier Rocafort, Luis Alberto Flores, Anthony Greenwood, Simon Brasch, David Praill, Amelia Giordano, Liliana De Lima

IAHPC Press, 2007
335 pp
ISBN 0-9858525-5-8
Available as book or CD
RRP € 50 from http://www.eapcnet.org

This book is a progress report from the EAPC (European Association for Palliative Care) Task Force on the Development of Palliative Care in Europe. It provides a country-by-country report on how palliative care has developed, what services are available, the state of health care policy with regard to palliative care, and the availability of accreditation for professionals. The material is presented in a very accessible manner with the liberal use of tables and maps.

What struck me most while leafing through this book was how palliative care has blossomed in Europe. EAPC was only formed in December 1988 and this book is testament to how much has happened. Makes one feel good to be part of palliative care.

This book contains an enormous amount of information and will be an invaluable resource for palliative care associations, health care planners and government departments responsible for palliative care. The authors, the EAPC, and Liliana De Lima and the team at IAHPC Press are to be congratulated.

Book Reviews

TRANSFORMATIONAL ELDERCARE FROM THE INSIDE OUT
Strengths-Based Strategies for Caring

James and Linda Henry
Nursesbooks.org, American Nurses Association, 2007
196 pp
ISBN 1-55810-229-9
RRP $US 34.95 at www.nursesbooks.org

Based on a series of interviews with health care professionals and administrators, this book is about how eldercare might be improved and made more appropriate. Is older adulthood, for all its challenges, a desirable stage in a life of social, psychological and spiritual expansion? If you think so, then this book provides a clear discussion of many of the aspects of eldercare that need to be modified or changed in order to provide better care in the future. This book is written in a very straightforward and practical manner. It will be both a valuable resource and a challenge to anyone who is involved in the provision or planning of eldercare. A separate Facilitator’s Guide is also available on CD-ROM.

NEARING DEATH AWARENESS

Mary Anne Sanders
Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2007
128 pp
ISBN 978-1-84310-857-3
RRP £11.99  $US 17.95

This book is subtitled ‘A Guide to the Language, Visions and Dreams of the Dying’. Written by a Spiritual Guidance Mentor, this book is a description of what the dying say, see and dream. What particularly interested me was the interpretation of what was observed, as so many of the examples cited could have easily been written-off as terminal confusion or delirium. If you work with the terminally ill, I feel sure this book will interest you.

LIVING CONSCIOUSLY, DYING GRACEFULLY
A Journey with Cancer and Beyond

Nancy Manahan and Becky Bohan
Beaver’s Pond Press, 2007-08-31
218 pp
ISBN 1-59298-179-8
RRP $US17.00 £8.30

This is the story of one woman’s five-year journey with breast cancer. Seemingly quite a remarkable woman, a professor of nursing who integrated complementary therapies with orthodox cancer treatments. Her manner of dealing with a life-threatening illness inspired many of those around her; your reviewer was also impressed by the photographs of her playing the cello and finishing the Twin Cities marathon. The book also contains a useful guide for lay persons about dealing with day-to-day issues surrounding death and dying.
