Message from the Chair
and Executive Director

Dear readers:

This month, we focus our announcement on new initiatives for our membership program.

Many of you may remember the Venice Declaration, a joint initiative developed under the leadership of IAHPC in collaboration with major regional and international palliative care organizations. The objective of the Declaration was to develop a global palliative care research initiative to support and enable research in developing countries. (Additional information about the Declaration of Venice as well as the organizations and individuals who signed it is available in http://www.hospicecare.com/dv/ )

One of the most critical tools to enable and facilitate research to improve patient care is access to new information and technology transfer. Scientific publications in peer reviewed journals are one of the most powerful tools in this regard. However, access to publications is very limited in developing countries for several reasons, most importantly the high subscription costs and membership fees to some of the organizations that own journals.

We are very pleased to announce that IAHPC has signed an agreement with EBSCO in order to bridge this gap. We are now offering to our members access to the large CINAHL database of journals and publications. Through this database, our members will be able to access thousands of citations, as well as full online access to hundreds of journals, including the following:

  • Indian Journal of Palliative Care
  • International Journal of Palliative Nursing
  • Internet Journal of Pain, Symptom Control & Palliative Care
  • Journal of Palliative Medicine
  • Journal of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacotherapy.
  • Palliative Medicine
  • Progress in Palliative Care

All board members and officers of IAHPC strongly support this effort and we are confident that this will lead to more research, and more publications in the developing countries. One of our goals is to facilitate and improve the palliative care agenda so that therapeutic guidelines, recommendations and treatment guidelines are also based on research designed and conducted in developing countries.

We are very grateful that the publishers of these journals are very supportive of this initiative. They found ways to enable legitimate access for our members to a wealth of published information.

Members may access the database at the following URL:

In order to facilitate access to this extraordinary resource and also enable individuals in developing countries to afford this benefit, the IAHPC board of directors adopted a new membership fee schedule based on the Gross National Income of the country where the palliative care worker is located, as reported by the United Nations. We think this is a more just and fair fee schedule that will facilitate access to the database of workers from around the globe. These revised membership fees will be implemented during this month.

The Board has also adopted new Membership Guidelines. These guidelines can be downloaded from our website in http://www.hospicecare.com/members/IAHPC_Membership_PrograGuidelines.pdf

We hope that you will join or renew your membership if you have not done so yet. To join, click on http://www.hospicecare.com/join.htm

Our current members are already enjoying this benefit – click here to read some of the messages we have received. We appreciate these notes and are pleased that so many of you are now using this resource. We would like to hear from more of you as you begin to use the database in your work and research. Please let us know!

Until next month,

Roberto Wenk, MD
