The mentally ill may terminate their lives?

Assisted suicide has been legal in Switzerland since 1918 where it allows nonresidents to participate even without the involvement of a physician. Recently the Swiss high court upheld the right of persons suffering from “incurable,
permanent, severe psychological disorders” to terminate their own lives.”

The Pain and Policy Studies Group at the University of Wisconsin

Dear Colleagues,
The Pain and Policy Studies Group at the University of Wisconsin, and a Collaborating Center for the World Health Organization (WHO) has prepared its Annual Report for 2006 for the WHO.  As you will see, the report highlights our continuing efforts using WHO guidelines to improve cancer and AIDS patients' access to pain medications throughout the world.  The PPSG staff is grateful for the opportunity to have collaborated with you and acknowledge that we could not have made such progress without your valuable contributions.  We look forward to continued collaboration as we strive toward our ultimate goal of pain relief for everyone in need.
This and previous annual reports can be found at:

.

We welcome any comments or suggestions that you may have.

Best regards,
Jody Garthwaite

Clearing House Program Announcement

As it was announced in previous editions of our NL, during April we sent the final shipment of books and journals from our Clearing House Program as we have closed our Clearing House Program. Some of those programs and hospices have started receiving this last shipment and we are starting to receive thank you notes and letters of gratitude. This section includes some of those.

Since the inception of the program in 2002 we have sent more than 4 tons of books and journals to 532 programs, individuals, hospices, hospitals, academic centers and libraries around the world. It is impossible for us to know the extent to which these publications are read or used by students, teachers and clinical workers or whether they contributed to changes in practice that benefited patient care. However, we have positive testimonials from many individuals who have received shipments which leads us to believe that this program has fulfilled its purpose. We are very grateful with all those donors to the program during these past years, especially Oxford University Press, Ms Pam Bennett from Purdue Pharma, the Pain and Policy Studies Group at Madison, Wisconsin, Marilyn Herleth from the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, and the Journal of Palliative Care among others. They all contributed to the success of the program through their consistent shipment of material and donations.

Liliana De Lima, MHA
IAHPC Executive Director
