Award

India

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is a central organization of industry, trade and commerce in India. The FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) was set up with a view to encourage women to discover their own potential as entrepreneurs and professionals. In pursuance of these aims FLO has instituted two annual awards, one for an outstanding woman entrepreneur and the other for an outstanding woman social worker. The jury is composed of men and women of distinction drawn from different walks of life.

Harmala Gupta, President of CanSupport, a home based palliative care programme in New Delhi, India, was this year’s selection as Outstanding Woman Social Worker of the Year. She received her award, a plaque and citation, from Neena Lal Kidwai, CEO of HSBC, an international private banking company, during a function held on the 5 th of April in New Delhi. The award recognizes her pioneering work in the field of cancer care and support. Harmala is a survivor of Hodgkin’s lymphoma; she founded the first cancer support group in India in 1991 and five years later, in 1996, founded CanSupport. CanSupport is an organization that has delivered care at home to more than 2000 patients and their families through a multi-disciplinary team of professionals trained in palliative care. Its daycare, help line and community outreach programmes are run by volunteers. CanSupport also holds an annual Foundation Course in Palliative Care in association with the Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital (IRCH) with funding from Help the Hospices, UK. All of its services are free.
