ANNOUNCEMENTS
A letter with great news from Sudan
by Nahla Gafer
Dear Ms. Liliana De Lima,
I thank you for the great help you provided to Sudan.
I want to tell you of some of our advancements:
- the 2nd center in our country for oncology, National Cancer Institute, at Medani, opened their palliative care services for inpatients: 2 rooms, 1 doctor, 1 psychologist, 1 pharmacist and 2 nurses- all full-time and paid.
- the director of the Radiation and Isotope Center, Khartoum agreed to cover ticket and accommodation expenses for a trainer in Pediatric Palliative Care next November. Our pediatric oncology department has 25 beds, 2 pediatric oncologists, and they see almost 200 patients per week. Patients come from all over Sudan.
- I attended a Master’s Class in Palliative Care, Edinburgh, Feb 2012. It was a great opportunity to exchange experiences and links.
- I am sending 2 active nurses next month from our unit to India to attend a Palliative Care leadership and training workshop that will be held at Landour Community Hospital, Landour, Mussoorie, Uttarakhan, India.
- We have a plan to train 2 nurses from every primary health center, in Khartoum state, in palliative care. We are presently writing the project and seeking funds for the training. The Ministry of Health will cover salaries ... since the nurses are supposed to do home-care within their catchment areas.
Yours sincerely,
Nahla Gafer
