Doctorate in Palliative Care - UK

The first Doctorate in Palliative Care will commence later in 2010 at Lancaster University. Offered by the world-renowned International Observatory on End of Life Care based within the School of Health and Medicine. The part time course has been carefully designed for people working in palliative, hospice and end of life care. It aims to equip them with the skills that will enable them to undertake advanced study within their chosen field.

The objectives of the PhD in Palliative Care are:

  •  to create leaders in palliative care
  •  to promote the development of advanced knowledge and practice
  •  to foster critical approaches to evidence review
  •  to enhance scholarship and research skills
  •  to develop a critical understanding of policy and practice

The Doctorate in Palliative Care is an innovative part-time PhD with coursework, research and thesis. The taught element will be predominantly delivered through distance e-learning, which will enable students to study much of the course from home, coupled with attendance at specific sessions in Lancaster. The research component will be supervised from Lancaster but undertaken in the students’ environment.
The new Course Director for the PhD in Palliative Care, Dr Sarah Brearley, said “I am thrilled and excited to be part of the first Doctorate in Palliative Care in the world. It is an amazing opportunity to create leaders in palliative care and to, ultimately, make a difference to patients’ lives. I feel honoured to have the opportunity to work with international students from backgrounds in hospices, hospitals, education and other organisations.”

The Doctorate comes at an exciting time for the International Observatory on End of Life Care and its new Director Professor Sheila Payne. It already has a worldwide reputation for teaching and research and is well known for its comparative analysis of international hospice and palliative care services. Prof Payne said, “We are delighted about the interest in our new Doctorate, from the UK and around the World.”
The first cohort of the doctorate will commence in June 2010. Further information about the PhD can be found
