Message from the Chair
and Executive Director

Dear Readers:

As many of you know, during this past month we asked members to nominate candidates to seven seats in our Board of Directors. We received nominations of several excellent candidates and the board will be voting on the nominations in the next few days. The results of the vote will be announced later this month. For those of you who participated, thank you very much for your interest and support of IAHPC.

On October 10th, the 4th World Hospice and Palliative Care Day was celebrated. This effort was coordinated by the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA) and has proven to be a great way to bring attention to the issues related to the availability of, access to, and provision of Hospice and Palliative Care around the world. Because of the World Day, the level of advocacy and dissemination of the principles of palliative care have reached critical masses of people, policy makers and health care providers. If you wish to read reports on how participants from around the globe celebrated the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, or to submit a report of your activities, please visit the World Day website at http://www.worldday.org/

The IAHPC has received a grant for organizational support and capacity building for use in 2010 from the US Cancer Pain Relief Committee (USCPRC). We are very grateful to the USCPRC for their support which will help us strengthen our organization and enable us to continue to fulfill our mission.

We are pleased to announce that the IAHPC has secured funds to support 15 palliative care workers from developing countries to attend the 5th Congress of the Latin American Association for Palliative Care (Asociacion Latinoamericana de Cuidados Paliativos – ALCP) which will take place March 15-18 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. To learn more about the congress, click on http://vcongresoalcp.org/pagina-de-inicio Palliative Care workers from developing countries are welcome to apply – note the Congress is conducted in Spanish. Applicants who have received an acceptance of posters or presentations will be given preference. The deadline to apply is December 10, 2009. Last month we awarded a grant to Dr. Dingle Spence, from Kingston, Jamaica, to support her participation in the Intensive Board review Course in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and to also attend the 13th Annual Symptom Control, Palliative and Hospice Care Conference at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, USA. Dr Spence is also one of the international fellows currently working with the Pain and Policy Studies Group at the University of Wisconsin to identify and eliminate barriers to the availability of opioids for pain treatment. Congratulations to Dr. Spence for this recognition. We look forward to her report and hope that her trip to Houston will prove to be useful in her efforts to develop hospice and palliative care in the Caribbean.

Until next month,

Roberto Wenk, MD
