IAHPC TRAVELING SCHOLAR'S Report
The 7th International Workshop on Resource Mobilization (IWRM) was conducted May 5-7, 2006 in Bangkok , Thailand . I was able to attend this workshop because of the financial support provided by the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care ( IAHPC). Participation in this workshop was very helpful to my Hospice and Palliative Care Program in the Philippines . The program had a repertoire of varied and dynamic speakers and experts in fund-raising in voluntary organizations. It also included several panel discussions, cross-regional case studies and participatory workshops designed to help raise funds for various causes. There were plenary sessions on enhancing personal skills of resource mobilization, debate on ethics of fund raising, and international funders, presented in the Funder's Forum. The speakers shared insights on how to secure support and build successful relationships with major sources of funding for various organizations. The speakers also provided tools for evaluating the organization, to improve fund raising techniques and they provided us the stimulus to believe that what we were doing is very possible, especially if it is for a good cause. With regards to our project of building the first ever Hospice and Family Care Center in the Philippines, this is a monumental task considering our limited resources; however, with the motivation provided by the IWRM I believe that with faith in God and with the commitment in our hearts, we can finish the building in due time and achieve the impossible.
I would like to thank the IAHPC for giving me the opportunity to attend this workshop and I hope that in the future, other organizations that focus on Hospice Care will also be able to attend these seminars to enhance their skills in fund raising in order to work for the betterment of palliative care in their communities.
