Announces
Refresher course in Palliative Care 2008
at
Trivandrum, 15-17 February 2008.

            This refresher course is meant for doctors and nurses who have already had their basic education in palliative care and particularly those who are practicing palliative care.
            The refresher course will be held on the weekend following the annual conference of the Indian Association of Palliative Care (Kochipallcon) at Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala, 200 kilometers south of Kochi – about 4-5 hours by road or by rail.  There are also several daily flights between Kochi and Trivandrum.
The course will be mostly comprised of interactive discussions with very few short didactic sessions.  They will cover the following areas:

  1. Defining palliative care: When does it start – what disease spectrum will it cover?
  2. Management of difficult pain.
  3. Difficult areas in symptom control.
  4. Collusion, and interacting with family.
  5. Difficult areas in psycho-spiritual support.
  6. Children and palliative care.
  7. Palliative care and the elderly.
  8. Social support and rehabilitation.
  9. Advancing palliative care in India.

To facilitate interaction, participation will be restricted to 30, on a first-come-first served basis.

Medicine and Nursing Need Leaders in Palliative Care Education
An intensive course for physician- and nurse-educators,
given in two one-week blocks (Spring and Fall).

Dear Colleague,

The Harvard Medical School Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice course offers intensive learning experiences for physician- and nurse-educators who wish to become expert in the clinical practice and teaching of comprehensive, interdisciplinary palliative care, as well as to gain expertise in leading and managing improvements in palliative care education and practice at their own institutions.

The Curriculum Features:

  • Teaching the fundamentals of palliative care (assessment of physical causes of distress, psychosocial and spiritual assessment, ethical and cultural issues, palliative care in geriatrics and pediatric populations, depression, bereavement)
     
  • Teaching about communication at the end of life (understanding the experience of life-threatening illness, breaking bad news, communicating across cultural barriers, family meetings, providing feedback to learners)
     
  • Managing challenges in palliative care education (principles of adult learning, understanding learning styles, new teaching methodologies)
     
  • Developing and promoting clinical and educational programs in palliative care (assessing institutional structure and culture; evaluating readiness to change, dealing with resistance; developing and financing palliative care programs; fund-raising strategies)
  • New! Pediatric Track will highlight the unique aspects of pediatric palliative care.

In just under a year, the UICC 2008 World Cancer Congress, will bring together people like yourself, cancer professionals from all fields who will review, discuss and learn about the latest cutting-edge developments in the global fight against cancer. In this e-update, we would like to bring you the latest news in the planning of this event as well as inform you about some interesting money saving tips.


1. Preliminary Programme unveiled pdf - Download free software

The five-track programme that will offer opportunities for exchange of knowledge and ideas and in-depth learning on all aspects of the global fight against cancer. The 2008 World Cancer Congress will focus on global, regional and national activities in cancer prevention and control, tobacco control, knowledge transfer, supportive care and capacity building, making it a uniquely comprehensive and relevant event for the cancer control community throughout the world. 2. Now accepting abstracts 

ALL cancer professionals should consider submitting an abstract as ALL activities in ALL fields are considered. Online abstract submission is now open and runs though 29 February 2008 (midnight CET). We look forward to a broad and diverse contribution from the global cancer community; every submission will be reviewed by the scientific committee and acceptance notifications will be mailed from10 April 2008. During the abstract submission process, applicants have the possibility to apply for travel grants to support them with their expenses to come to Geneva. 3. Registration open at special conditions 

Online Congress registration is now open and we would like to draw your attention to the very special conditions that are offered to delegates who register until 31 December 2007 (midnight CET). Click here to register now and save on your registration fee.
