Message from the Chair and Executive Director

Dear readers:

October is a very important month for the global Palliative Care community:

1. Members’ Month: October is the IAHPC Members’ month and we are celebrating the support we receive from individuals and institutions around the world by awarding prizes in two categories: one is to recognize loyalty among those current members who have kept their membership active for more than one year, and the second recognizes those who bring and invite others to join. As we announced in our previous edition of this newsletter, and through our list of subscribers, this month we will be giving away an iPad in each category. To learn more about how the prizes are awarded, please click on
http://www.hospicecare.com/news/11/09/iahpc-announcement.html

We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity and continue to support IAHPC and our mission to promote and advance palliative care globally.

2. World Hospice Palliative Care Day: Saturday October 8th is the World Hospice Palliative Care Day (WHPCD), a great initiative campaign coordinated by the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA). As we write this newsletter, many organizations throughout the world are planning celebrations to increase awareness among lay people, governments and patients. The message is that palliative care improves the quality of life of patients and families and that appropriate policies and funding mechanisms need to be in place to ensure access to palliative care for those in need. More about the WHPCD, and the initiatives taking place around the world, photos and resources are available in the World Day website at http://www.worldday.org/

This edition of the NL has a copy of the announcement.

4. Traveling Fellowship awards : We are also happy to announce that we awarded three grants under our Traveling Fellowship program to the following:

  • Ms. Esther Dorothy Walker, staff Nurse at St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford, UK to support her return to Khartoum, Sudan where she has been helping to develop and establish a palliative care program in SOBA University Hospital and The Radiation and Isotope Centre.

Congratulations to the grantees on their selection – we hope their fellowships will help advance palliative care and have the impact they are aiming for. We look forward to their reports after they return.

Many thanks to our generous donors who make these programs possible and enable us to continue helping the development of palliative care. Donations make it possible for us to continue supporting extraordinary efforts by individuals in developing countries who are working very hard to promote and develop hospice and palliative care around the globe. A large part of our support comes from public donations. We have started our annual fundraising campaign; several of you will receive a letter requesting support by e-mail – please consider donating and supporting our work. For additional information on how to help us, please go to https://www.hospicecare.com/give/donate.html

Later this month we will send an announcement asking for your nominations of candidates to our board. We hope that many of you will respond to our invitation and become a part of this great organization by helping us with the board selection process.

Until next month,
