Message from the Chair and Executive Director

Dear readers:

We hope this New Year brings happiness, health and peace to you and your loved ones.

As many of you are aware, we recently completed the nomination process of six candidates to our board of directors for the term 2011-2013. Many thanks to all the members who participated by nominating candidates as well as to the nominees for their interest and support of IAHPC. New directors will be announced in our Newsletter next month.

As you know, this month marks the start of a new term for our Chair, Dr. Roberto Wenk, who was re-elected by the board. During this term, we will focus on governance issues and developing strategies to identify ways that IAHPC can serve the palliative care community more effectively, and efficiently, with the limited resources we have.

During the past several years many advances and changes have taken place especially in our ability to communicate with palliative care workers around the globe. These are exciting times for they offer new opportunities for collaboration, networking and support. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to support palliative care in developing countries and to implement cost effective strategies and programs that maximize our ability to help and accomplish our mission. Please find our mission statement at: http://www.hospicecare.com/Organisation/Org.htm#Mission

As we have in the past, we will continue to assist with the development of palliative care, education, research and practice around the world.

Our website is currently undergoing major changes which you will notice as you browse through it in the near future. Because of the great work of our web designer, Ms Anne Laidlaw and her team at Alou, we have been able to continue to provide a website that is interesting, informational and resourceful. Please send us your suggestions on how we can improve the website to be more relevant and useful to you as you promote palliative care in your institution, region or country.

The end of the year marks the expiration of many IAHPC memberships. Individuals and institutions whose memberships recently expired should have received reminders to renew. If your membership expired and you have not renewed, please do so. Membership dues are a very important source of income for IAHPC and help us continue our mission. To renew your membership, please go to our website at www.hospicecare.com and click on the IAHPC Membership Join/Renew button in the links column on the left. If you are not a member, we invite you to join!

During the month of December, we received many donations from members and individuals - some in memory of a friend or loved one as a gesture of gratitude for the care that they received from hospice and palliative care providers. Many thanks for your encouragement, support, and help. These donations are very important to the organization as they are a reflection of the impact we are having at the level that matters most - patients and families.

We appreciate the confidence that all of our donors, members and readers have placed in us and in our work. We will strive to be better each day and look forward to working with you in 2011.

Until next month,

Roberto Wenk, MD
Chair, Board of Directors

Liliana De Lima, MHA
