Message from the Chair
and Executive Director
Dear readers:
A few weeks ago we sent an invitation to apply for grants for travel to the 18th International Congress in Montréal on October 5-8, 2010. Many applicants have responded enthusiastically. This edition of the newsletter includes the announcement and the criteria and instructions on how to apply. We look forward to your submissions.
This past month we gave three Traveling Scholarships to the following great palliative care workers:
- Nurse Nicoleta Mitrea, Director of Nursing of “Casa Sperantai” Hospice in Brasov, Romania, to attend the Harvard Medical School Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice, in Boston.
- Doctor Beatriz Thompson, Anesthesiologist and President of Belize Hospice Palliative Care Foundation from Belize City, Belize, to visit the Clinica Familia in Santiago, Chile as an observer.
- Doctor Mukelabai Mukelabai, specialist in Anaesthesia, Critical Care and HIV/AIDS and Pain Management, at the ACCHAP Center in Mufulira, Zambia, to attend the International Conference on Neuropathic Pain in, Athens, Greece.
Congratulations to the three grantees for this recognition and the scholarships. We look forward to their reports after they return.
We were recently informed by Dr. M.R. Rajagopal, one of our board members, about a recent statement made by the President of India enthusiastically supporting palliative care (see board updates in this newsletter). Congratulations to all the palliative care workers in India. This demonstrates excellent advocacy work which led to this recognition by such a high level representative!
The European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) recently led a consensus on norms and standards to provide guidance to palliative care workers on how to establish and implement palliative care in their health care systems. This has recently been published as The EAPC White Paper on Standards and Norms for Hospice and Palliative Care. The document provides definitions, an overview of the philosophy of palliative care and recommendations for different settings as to the number of services, staffing and service provision. It is available in the EAPC website at: http://www.eapcnet.org/publications/WP_Standard&Norms.html
Congratulations to the EAPC for this great resource.
Until next month!
