NATIONAL SUPPORTIVE AND PALLIATIVE CARE CONFERENCE WELCOMES LEADING NAMES IN THE FIELD OF SUPPORTIVE CARE
University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
November 13 and 14, 2009

Improving the quality of life for all cancer patients and their families is paramount in comprehensive cancer care. The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, together with the Department of Palliative Care and Rehabilitation, proudly announce the 13th Annual Symptom Control, Palliative and Hospice Care Conference to be held in the Robert C. Hickey Auditorium on November 13 and 14th, 2009.

M. D. Anderson is no stranger to hosting leading names in the field of supportive care, as the Department of Palliative Care and Rehabilitation Medicine and its Chair, Eduardo Bruera, MD, are recognized world-wide for their achievements and advancements in palliative care.

This year, however, we are honored to welcome additional world leaders in the field of supportive care. They are:

Dr. Kathleen Foley, neurologist and Chair of the Department of Pain and Palliative Care at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York will receive the 6th Annual John Mendelsohn Award for her pioneering advancements in the field of supportive care. In addition to the award presentation, Dr. Foley will present on the advancements in palliative care both nationally and internationally, as well as the challenges of treating cancer pain.

Coupled with this honor, we are also proud to have the opportunity to host Betty Ferrell, PhD, RN, FAAN, research scientist for the City of Hope National Research Center. She will receive the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award in Nursing for her dedication and advancements in the role of nursing in supportive care. Dr. Ferrell will address the nature of suffering and the goals of nursing.

The annual conference will take place following two board review courses available to physicians and nurses interested in obtaining a board certification in hospice and palliative medicine during the 2010 exam cycle.

Registration details for both the annual conference, as well as the board review courses, can be found on the CME/Conference Management Website: www.mdanderson.org/conferences.
