Message from the Chair
and Executive Director

Roberto Wenk, MD (Argentina)
Liliana De Lima, MHA (USA)

Dear readers,

Last month Liliana was in New Delhi India attending the 16th International Conference of the Indian Association of Palliative Care where the theme was "Freedom from Pain." She also visited several palliative programs around the country and we look forward to her reports.

The Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA) announces the 4th Worldwide Summit for National Associations of Hospice and Palliative Care. It will take place during 5-6 May 2009 in Vienna, Austria. The theme for the summit will be "Discovering your Voice" which is in line with the upcoming World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2009. We send our congratulations for organizing this important meeting.

We are pleased that our calls for applications for IAHPC Traveling Scholarships to attend the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) meeting in Vienna received such an enthusiastic response from around the world. More than 50 applications were received for the 10 available scholarships. This indicates a need and also the increased interest in the field. We wish we could have provided more scholarships, but we have limited funds. Hopefully in the future more funding will be available to continue to support individuals that need assistance. The grantees will be announced shortly. We appreciate your interest and participation.

We are delighted to announce that during March we will start testing the updated IAHPC website. We intend this to be a resource of our association that is useful worldwide. The updating process took into consideration the results of a survey we conducted last year about the website. If you have suggestions on how we may optimize its performance and usefulness please send them to us.

IAHPC is a small organization with limited resources but we manage to utilize most of our funds at the grass root level. We depend on membership dues and donations to make what we do possible. Please join us in this important work.

Thanks to all of you who have recently renewed the IAHPC membership. Your contribution is of great importance to us - w ithout your support we would not be able to help others. To join or renew please go to: http://www.hospicecare.com/join.htm

Also, many thanks for your readership.

Until next month,

Roberto Wenk, MD
