Message from the Chair
and Executive Director

Roberto Wenk, MD (Argentina)
Liliana De Lima, MHA (USA)

Dear readers:

As we recently announced, IAHPC will provide ten scholarships of US$2,000 to each individual from a developing country to cover their cost of travel and stay for the next congress of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) in Vienna, May 7-11, 2009. Additional information about the EAPC Congress can be found in http://www.eapcnet.org/vienna2009/index.html

Applicants must be living in a developing country, be members of IAHPC and actively working in palliative care. Applications from physicians, nurses, psychologists and other disciplines are welcome. Preference will be given to individuals who have not received an IAHPC grant in the past three years and who also have a poster or oral presentation accepted in the Congress.

Applications are available through the IAHPC website in www.hospicecare.com/Travellscholars/  Please send proof of acceptance of a poster or oral presentation, along with a copy of your current CV. Deadline to apply is February 20, 2009. Results will be announced by March 1st.

IAHPC recently received a grant for organizational support and capacity building from the US Cancer Pain Relief Committee (USCPRC). We are very grateful to the USCPRC for their support which will help us strengthen our organization and enable us to continue to strive to fulfill our mission.

Last but not least, we are also glad to announce that the IAHPC Press has recently published two additional books:

  1. Getting Started: Guidelines for those starting a hospice and palliative care program by Derek Doyle. This new edition is revised, has additional chapters and is also now available in a pdf file for those who wish to download and print it. The book may be downloaded from www.hospicecare.com/gs/book/start.htm
  1. In alliance with the Latin American Association for Palliative Care, IAHPC Press has also published the curriculum for palliative care postgraduate training for nurses (in Spanish). The book is also available in pdf and can be downloaded from www.cuidadospaliativos.org/recursos/curriculos

Many thanks to Dr. Doyle and the members of the ALCP nursing commission for their hard work and effort. Both publications are extraordinary and we invite you to read and benefit from them.

Until next month,

Roberto Wenk, MD
