It costs R6000 but students are being subsidized by HPCA and their Hospices.  Lectures are held every Thursday from 08:30 - 13:30 for the duration of the course.  The following modules are covered: Principles and Ethics of Palliative Care, Pain and Symptom Control, Basic Communication Skills in Palliative Care and PsychoSocial, Spiritual and Cultural Issues in Palliative Care.  The course consists of 3 parts - 35 days interactive workshops based on participatory learning methods suitable for adult learners, An asssessment component (examination, case study, communication skills and portfolio) and 128 hours clinical work done in a HPCA recognised Hospice.  To qualify for the certificate of completion for this short course, participants should fully attend the workshops, successfully complete the assessment process and complete the clinical work.

Mostly courses are multiprofessional and at postgraduate level. Groups are limited up to 20ó25 participants. Basic course is lasting for four days and it is always multiprofessional one. Covered topics:philosophy and history of hospice palliative care, organization of services, communication including breaking bad news,team work, symptom control for most common symptoms, psychosocial issues, spiritual needs, ethical principles and issues.  Advanced course lasts for five days. Some topics are similar to those covered by basic one but in more detail according to the target group of professionals. Some symptoms not covered by the basic course are included. There are several workshops regarding communication, symptom control, psychological and ethical issues. Lectures supported by power point presentation are usual, but role play, DVD presentations etc are common, too.

Is a 120 hours of theory and  1 month of bedside teaching at the National Cancer Institute. The course is competence based. The primary competency that students must acquire is skills needed in primary palliative care to improve quality of life for patients and families. This primary competency comprises five second-line competencies that students are expected to acquire: 1 Recognize and assess pain and other symptoms effectively by an adequate history, physical examination and investigations. Make appropiate therapeutic plan to improve quality of life. The student also acquires the criteria for referral. 2 Demonstrate attitudes to improve care through adequate communication with patients, families and caregivers. 3 Assess psychological needs in the different stages of the disease-health process and acquire the skills to make appropiate interventions. 4 Develop the ability to identify ethical dilemas.
