Dear IAHPC and Liliana:
I would like to thank you for the valuable bibliographic material you kindly send to the Palliative Care program at the National Cancer Institute in in Guatemala. Our Palliative Care Unit is only one year young, and has faced the same difficulties of all the "lacks of" that are common in underdeveloped countries. The books and magazines you've sent have been of great benefit to our team, and I'm sure this will be reflected in our patients care. Thanks for all the help and support we've received from IAHPC through you since the first letter I wrote you asking for information!!!
My best regards,

I wanted to say thanks for the magazines and books that were sent to me from IAHPC as part of your in house clearing program. They were a very thoughtful collection. We particularly enjoyed and have used suggestions from the book on adult training. The book on HIV in women was also useful. Being a Paediatrician, I don’t know as much as I should about adult HIV and have forgotten a lot of my undergraduate Gynecology training. I often get asked questions by mothers of my patients: so the book is most useful. The pain articles were also interesting and will come in handy when I start my formal training.

Dear Ms. Liliana:
Thank you very much for the books and journals. These are always very useful for our unit staff to prepare lectures and organize seminars. Special literature, especially in palliative care is quite difficult to get in Latvia. Therefore, we start with the materials which we can get, turn them into lectures, and afterwards compile as a teaching material in booklets. This is a very valuable thing and we highly appreaciate IAHPC's assistance to help us develop palliative care in Latvia.

I was delighted to receive the Oxford Textbook yesterday which you sent in February.
God bless you for your thinking of us and your generosity.
I am giving this copy to Little Hospice Hoima who opened their first own building last Tuesday. Many of our trainees in palliative medicine have placements in LHH because they are doing a lot of community work for us there and assisting many patients and families who are identified by their trained village vigilantes.
So thank you so much.

Today, very appropriately on the eve of the World Day of Palliative Care, I received the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine that you sent in March. I hope that you have not thought us rude for not thanking you earlier. It has taken the book a little while to get here to the island, but we are very grateful.
It has taken quite a while to become a legal Charity here in Greece and we are just going through the final phases now and hope to have our official Charity status by Christmas.
The need here is very great for cancer support and palliative care. There have been many people dying here supported by their families but in great pain and with no intelligent information as regards their disease. At present there is no Hospice in Athens and the knowledge of Palliative Care in this part of Greece is very limited.
We have to be very sensitive here in a small closed Orthodox Community to be seeing to be supporting the families, rather than imposing western ideas, particularly in an area where people are sometimes not aware that they have cancer and the word is not often used. We have the blessing of the Priests which is enormously important and the support of many Greek families.
I will attach our Charter, as you can see it is simple and we have to start in a small way. It is costing us 1,000 euros to become a legal Charity and we are still in the middle of raising this. Once we are legal we would very much like to become a member of IAHPC.
Thank you again very much for the Textbook.
With very best wishes

I apologize for not communicating with you sooner due to my overwhelmed administrative responsabilities in the hospital and a hectic schedule with my patients. However, I wanted to express my deepest gratitude for your kindness and consideration.
Four weeks ago I received the courtesy copy of the Second Edition of the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine as part of your Clearing House Program, which I consider the most comprehensive edition of studies in palliative medicine and palliative care and a valuable learning tool. I can not thank you enough for facilitating this extraordinary edition to us, which, as you are aware, it is not available in my country.
My medical assistants and nurse practitioner are very impressed with it and wanted me to extend their gratitude to you as well. Because of your kindness, they are also benefiting by improving their professional growth in the field of palliative medicine which will be reflected in the quality of services to our patients.

What a blessing it is to have an update on the first edition which we have almost worn out with use - we were lucky enough to have more than one copy so were able to loan to other practices in the community on occasion.

Thank you very much for the Oxford text book of Palliative Medicine you sent us as part of your Clearing house program. We were badly in need of such an authentic text. Ours is a Palliative care unit functioning as a collaboration between a government and a Charitable organization named Pain and Palliative Care Society, Thrissur. We have a team of doctors, volunteers and nurses, most of whom had received basic training in palliative care. But we have a long way to go in the area of training and research work. Your donation will definitely help us in this endeavour. We would like to have more of such teaching/learning materials. This is also a request for more of books/ journals etc.
Thanking you

Subject: Appreciation & Request
We can not thank you enough for your laudable efforts, considering the dearth of Health information and textbooks in developing countries. Your gesture in sending us some useful texts and journals in the IAHPC Clearing House Program can not be overemphasised. Ours is a just developing set up with lots of interests and enthusiasim in the newly converts to Palliative Care Services. Needless to say that the followers are thirsty for the new knlowlegde and skills.
Your donations came at the right time.
Apart from efforts being put in place to establish Palliative Care services in this centre, no prior formal Palliative Care services exist in Ogun-State, Nigeria However this Centre has been trying its best in spite of the meager resources at its disposal in rendering voluntary services for terminally ill patients like HIV/AIDS and cancer patients.
Thanks for the encouragement.
