IAHPC BOOK REVIEW

HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE
Concepts and Practice, 2nd Edition

Walter B. Forman, Judith A. Kitzes, Robert P. Anderson, Denice Kopchak Sheehan (Editors)

Jones and Bartlett Publishers, 2003
288pp
ISBN 0-7637-1566-2
RRP $US39.95, £22.

This book is written as an introduction to hospice and palliative care for those starting out in the field or wishing to understand its place in the health care system. It provides a good overview of what palliative care is, how you should do it, and why. The various multidisciplinary aspects of palliative care – medical, spiritual, cultural, ethical, and bereavement care – are well covered; missing is a discussion of depression, anxiety and psychological distress. The chapter on communication is very good.

This would be a most useful book for anyone starting out in palliative care. It provides clear descriptions of the basic concepts and a good overview of the multidisciplinary nature of palliative care. The chapter on eligibility and reimbursement refers to the system as it exists in the United States, but the material in the other chapters is relevant to an international readership and the book would be suitable for postgraduate courses in palliative care.
