IAHPC BOOK REVIEW

HANDBOOK OF PSYCHIATRY
IN PALLIATIVE MEDICINE

Harvey Chochinov and William Breitbart (Eds)

Oxford University Press 2000
435pp
ISBN 019 509 299-6
RRP $US82.50 £52.50

This book is a tour-de-force of the psychiatric and psychosocial aspects of palliative medicine, for which Drs Chochinov and Breitbart have assembled a distinguished list of contributors.

Part I includes good reviews of anxiety, delirium and depression; the difficulties experienced in diagnosing depression in physically ill palliative care patients are described but no practical guidance offered. Part II includes interesting chapters on the psychiatric aspects of treating pain, eating disorders and fatigue—symptoms in which physical and psychological factors interact and overlap. Part III describes the range of different psychotherapeutic interventions and Part IV is about pediatric palliative care. Part V includes discussions on family issues, communication and bereavement, as well as a useful chapter on staff stress. Part VI includes chapters on ethical and spiritual issues and the treatment of suffering.

Given the frequency and importance of psychiatric and psychosocial problems, this book will be a very useful resource for practitioners of palliative care and certainly should be available for reference in the library of any palliative care unit.
