PALLIATIVE CARE: THE NURSING ROLE

Jean Lugton and Margaret Kindlen (Eds)

Churchill Livingstone
ISBN 0443 05513 0
306pp RRP $US32.95  £25.99

This book focuses on palliative nursing and the knowledge and skills needed to deliver high quality palliative care.

The eleven chapters provide an excellent cover of non-specialist nurse education in palliative care.  There are chapters on needs assessments, support processes, spiritual issues, body image and sexuality, complementary therapies, support for family and carers, grief and bereavement, ethical issues and audit.  These are well written, readable and emphasize a holistic approach to care.  There are many illustrative case histories and each chapter has a number of “Reflective Practice” sections that challenge the reader to think and reflect more deeply on the topic under consideration.

It is difficult to find any substantial deficiencies with this book.  It would perhaps have been improved by the inclusion of a chapter on professional self-care.  In the chapter on ethical principles, the principle of patient autonomy and informed consent could have received more emphasis.  In the three case histories presented, ethical dilemmas only arose because the patient was not included in the decision process.

This valuable book provides a comprehensive coverage of palliative nursing in a very holistic framework.  It emphasises the process of learning, particularly critical reflection on clinical practices.  Whilst written for nurses, the reasoned and holistic approach to care described in this book would make it very useful for junior medical staff and allied health personnel who come into contact with palliative care.
