The Oxford Topics in Palliative Care series comprise reviews on a variety of topics covering the spectrum of palliative care. Volume 5 (2001)
includes chapters on cultural issues, geriatrics, communication, research outcomes, opioid tolerance, equianalgesic doses of opioids, spinal analgesia, and delirium.
Highlights in this volume were Borneman and Ferrell’s chapter on planning care for the care-givers, which linked nicely to Cohen’s chapter
on quality of life that includes the assessment of the family or care-giver’s quality of life. The chapters on opioid tolerance and equianalgesic doses of different drugs are thorough and clinically
useful. The reviews of intraspinal analgesia and the management of delirium are practical updates.
In general, these reviews are up-to-date, well-written and adequately referenced. They provide an in-depth discussion of various subjects
and the reviews of recent advances in therapeutics are particularly useful. Not exactly cheap, but at one volume a year, they are a worthwhile investment for any palliative care service library.
