Professor Pesach Shvartzman (Israel)

Professor Pesach Shvartzman (Israel)

Professor Pesach Shvartzman graduated from the Technion Medical School in Haifa, Israel. He is board certified in family medicine and also by the American board in palliative care (2004).

He is chairman of the division of Community Health, and the department of Family Medicine at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He is also head of the Pain Management Service at the Clalit Health Services (south district), he is a pediatric palliative care consultant at Soroka University Medical Center, and a consultant of the home palliative care services in south Israel.

Prof. Shvartzman is the founder of the Israeli Palliative Care Society, and is the chair of the national committee for developing palliative care services in Israel (Ministry of Health).

Prof. Shvartzman leads a national program in palliative care training for multidisciplinary teams, in collaboration with the Israeli Palliative Care Association, HMOs, Ministry of Health, UJA-Federation of New York, ESHEL, and the Israeli Cancer Society. He was a visiting professor at the McGill palliative care unit, Montreal, Canada (1991), Universita Catolica, Quito, Ecuador (1997), and in Pain Medicine at Stanford University, USA (2000).

In an effort to provide palliative care services to remote areas of the Negev desert that are not covered by any home palliative care unit, a Bedouin mobile palliative care unit was purchased. This unit, staffed by a physician, nurse and a driver/translator reaches every corner of the Negev desert working side-by-side with primary care health teams and is available 24 hours/day to deliver care to the most desolate populations.

He has been extensively involved in research with over 150 peer-reviewed publications in print.
