K.S. Chan

DR. K S Chan was born and received medical education in Hong Kong. He graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1981. After he received medical training at the United Christian hospital in Hong Kong. He then went to the United States & the United Kingdom for further training in Pulomary Medicine & Palliative Medicine. Currently, he is the Consultant & Chief of Service of Pulmonary and Palliative Care Unit of Haven of Hope Hospital in Hong Kong.

Since the early days of his career, he had strong conviction for holostic care. The wide exposure to different specialties in his early medical career. Pathology, Psychiatry, Accident & Emergency Medicine and Palliative Medicine, had laid the foundation of his holistic approach in medical practice. Currently, he was the founding editor of Holistic Care of Electronic Knowledge Gateway (eKG) of Hospital Authority og Hong Kong.

His deadication towards the chronically ill and the terminally ill had led him to Haven of Hope hospital as the director of Pulmonary and Palliative Care since 1990. Haven of Hope Hospital was one of pioneer in hospice service in Hong Kong. In 1996, he launched the first palliative care service for AIDS under Hospital Authority. Together with other four forefathers, Palliative Medicine was established as a subspeciality under the Hong Kong College of Physician in 1997. He has been involving in the policy of service development of Hospice service of Hospital Authority, and the promotion of hospice work among siciety by Non-govermental organization. Currently he is the executive member of Society for Promotion of Hospice Care, the largest hospice NGI in Hong Kong.

He had assisted the establishment of hospices in Mainland China and Macau. He was appointed as the Honorary Consultant of Li Ka Shing Foundation, a foundation with the goal of establishing hospices in most provinces in mainland China.

Currently, he is the Chairman of Hong Kong Society of Palliative Medicine, and recentlyelected as council member of Asian-pacific hospice network. His main clinical interests in the past 10 years were dyspoea evaluation, and psycho-spiritual care.
