IAHPC has named this Award the Vittorio Ventafridda Award in recognition to Professor Vittorio Ventafridda’s leadership, vision and commitment to palliative care. Professor Ventafridda has been crucial in the development of palliative care in Europe and the rest of the World. The Board of Directors, Officers and Members of IAHPC are proud to name this award in his honor and hope that it will continue to lead others to follow his example.

Purpose
The International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) will give an annual recognition award in the amount of US$2,000 (two thousand US Dollars) to an individual who have significantly dedicated himself or herself to palliative or hospice care, conducive to increasing the quality of life of patients with incurable diseases.
The award is directed towards all health care professionals and lay workers and has the following goals:
To increase the recognition of individuals dedicated to the service of patients with progressive incurable illness and their families, in order to improve their quality of life.
To bring these individuals to the attention of institutions and organizations and have them recognize such efforts
Objective
To promote the development of palliative care throughout the world
and help individuals achieve this goal.
How to apply
Participants are to be nominated by individuals who are presently members of IAHPC. The nominator should submit the application in English and using the IAHPC official application. The application and proposal are not to exceed fifteen pages in letter size.
It includes:
The curriculum vitae of the nominee, including complete address, telephone; fax, and e-mail. It should list academic background, previous publications, research projects and significant accomplishments;
A written statement from the nominator describing the reasons why he or she believes the award should be given to the nominee. The statement should be in double space, not longer than 2,000 words. Any significant accomplishments which the nominator would like to expand or explain further than the space provided for the CV should be included here, as well as awards, and recognitions.
Any elements (letters of support, printed material, etc) or any other relevant to the application. These will become property of IAHPC and will not be returned to the nominator.
Selection Criteria
Proposals will be selected according to the fulfillment of the following criteria:
The individual who is nominating the candidate for the award is a current member of IAHPC;
The nominee’s demonstrated commitment to improve the care of persons with progressive incurable illness and their families;
The nominee’s level of involvement with the community;
The nominee's leadership and role in the development of palliative care in his/her country and abroad;
The quality, clarity and completeness of the application
Exclusion Criteria:
Individuals who have received the Vittorio Ventafridda Award in the past;
Individuals who are related to IAHPC board or staff members;
Applications received before December 31st. Applications received after this date will be considered for the following year.
